In its fourth year, the Patakha Pictures fellowship, led by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, celebrated the talent of 10 emerging female filmmakers from Pakistan, including KIU Media Department alumni Nadia Zartaj and Nagina Jabeen. Their documentary, De Mofat Voyn: Hope in Disaster, powerfully depicts the aftermath of the devastating 2012 flood in Avarice Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, focusing on the resilience of displaced communities, including Nagina’s own family. The documentary was one of five featured at a special screening hosted by SOC Films, attended by notable figures such as Sarwat Gilani and Mehwish Hayat. Reflecting on their journey, Nagina Jabeen emphasized the role of storytelling in empowering women, while Nadia Zartaj described the fellowship as a transformative experience that broadened her skills and perspective. Their work not only raises awareness of climate change’s devastating effects but also highlights the growing impact of KIU’s Media Department in nurturing storytellers who advocate for social change.
