Seema Iqbal(late)

Seema Iqbal, A brilliant student of the department of media and communication studies Karakuram international university. She was an independent filmmaker hailing from the picturesque Hunza Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan, was a remarkable talent whose contributions to the world of filmmaking left an indelible mark. Born and raised in the stunning landscapes of Hunza, Seema completed her matriculation at Diamond Jubilee School Ahmedabad, Hunza, and pursued her FSC from FG Degree College for Women, Gilgit. Her academic journey led her to Karakoram International University, Gilgit, where she studied Mass Communication, though her heart always beat for filmmaking and documentary production. She was always love to Capture stories with her camera traveling Photography ware her favorite hobbies.

Seema’s passion for filmmaking was evident from her early endeavors. She directed, shot, and edited multiple short films, showcasing her versatility and dedication to the craft. Her talent was recognized early on, earning her two prestigious filmmaking awards: one at Purazam Pakistan and another at the Bam-e-Duniya Film Festival.

Seema’s commitment to storytelling extended beyond her academic pursuits. She contributed significantly to Hunza News and served as a correspondent for Maati TV, representing Gilgit-Baltistan. Her outstanding work in the media and communication studies department earned her accolades for five documentary films, including the acclaimed “Women of Courage.”

Her talent was further recognized when she became an alumna of the first Pathaka Pictures fellowship by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Films and the Scottish Documentary Institute. Among her many accomplishments, her film “Ways of Seem” garnered attention at six film festivals, including two international ones.

Seema was not only a brilliant student but also a dedicated community servant. She actively engaged in extracurricular activities and volunteered with numerous organizations, including the Pakistan Red Crescent Society, Pakistan National Youth Assembly, and various student and community groups. Her humility, kindness, and love for capturing stories through her camera for social change though arts defined her character.

On July 30, 2023, she was injured in a gas cylinder blast and was in ICU for 15 days. on August 15, 2023 she take her last breath and close her eyes forever.

Seema Iqbal’s legacy as a passionate filmmaker and compassionate individual continues to inspire those who knew her and those who will discover her work in the years to come. Serish Kanwal

Sehrish Kanwal is a distinguished independent journalist and filmmaker from from Ghizer, Gilgit-Baltistan, known for her commitment to social change and community development. Her journey in media and journalism began in 2018 at Karakuram international university, department of media and communication studies. With her studies she continues working with Radio, press, broadcast and digital media. as a student journalist, a role that paved the way for numerous achievements and contributions to the field. She is currently working in different roles freelance journalist, youth trainer, social and climate activist, and serve her professional services as corporate communications officer.

In 2021, Sehrish started her filmmaking career alongside her late friend, Seema Iqbal. Their collaborative efforts in storytelling highlighted significant societal issues and brought them recognition. In 2022, Sehrish’s dedication was acknowledged with the prestigious Citizen Journalist Award by Media Matters for Democracy. The same year, she was honored with the Patakha Pictures Fellowship “The Pakistani Stories,” which provided her a platform to further her impact through film. Sehrish and Seem’s film ways of seeing was recognized in multiple National and international film festivals.

Sehrish’s academic journey is equally commendable. She pursued a BS in Media and Communication Studies from Karakoram International University, where her dedication and excellence earned her a gold medal. Throughout her studies, she was actively engaged in various media formats, including radio, TV, newspapers, magazines, and web channels. Her volunteer work with several organizations not only contributed to her personal and professional growth but also demonstrated her commitment to community service.

In 2022, Sehrish became an associate member of the Central Press Club Gilgit and launched her YouTube channel, Life Journals with Sehrish, where she shares insightful content on social issues. Her innovative spirit led her to co-found Subh-e-Roshan, a non-registered, non-profit organization focused on peace, democracy, and climate change.

Sehrish’s interests lie primarily in community journalism and environmental journalism. She is passionate about advocating for marginalized communities, persons with disabilities (PWDs), women empowerment, health, education, and human rights. Her work aims to be a catalyst for positive change, leveraging media and filmmaking to address critical societal issues. She also promote tourism and culture though her vlog content. She always loves to explore nature traveling is her favorite hobby.

she attained more than 100 worships and conferences at different locations ov Pakistan, representing the university she always admires the department and university behind her success that the university provided me opportunities of continuos grooming. She was the first newscaster and anchor person of KIU TV, and KIU FM 99 also Contributed a lot of work for the Karakuram magazine (university’s magazine) she was served her services as voice president of KIU adventure club, president of media society KIU, and being member of different societies during her study period at the university, actively engaged with the directorate of student affairs and directorate of public relations. She was leading the student council at KIU girls hostel for one year. proactively engaged in the cocricullar activities. These experiences provided her with valuable learning, networking opportunities, and mentorship, reinforcing her belief in the power of collective efforts in leadership.

Sehrish Kanwal’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and unwavering dedication to using media as a tool for social change. She continues to inspire others with her work, striving to be the voice of the voiceless and to create impactful content that addresses the true issues of society.

Sapna Zamir

Sapna Zamir is a final-year student who directed award-winning films during her university journey. Her film, Azam-e-Kuhaan, has been selected and won in various film festivals, including the Women International Film Festival. It received the Best Cinematographer Award at the Ghanhara International Film Festival (GIFF) and won three awards—Best Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Script—at the ZCOM Narzariya Film Festival. Additionally, it secured 3rd position at the Green Belief Film Festival organized by Pakistan Television.

Another film, Shadows Beneath the Peaks, gained national and international recognition. It was selected for the Health for All Film Festival organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) out of more than 1,000 films from around the world, being the sole selection from Pakistan, and is published on the WHO website. This documentary also won first place in the Citizen Journalism Award organized by HUM Network and is published on Planet Forward, an international platform.

Nida Zehra

Nida, a young woman hailing from Haramosh, Gilgit Baltistan, is currently pursuing a degree in Mass Communication at Karakoram International University. Despite her academic commitments, Nida has established herself as a highly accomplished freelancer, successfully completing numerous national and international projects within the media industry. Her impressive portfolio reflects both her dedication and expertise in this field.

In addition to her studies and freelance work, Nida is also the co-founder of Beehive Technology, a company based in Skardu. Founded at a young age, Beehive Technology is dedicated to empowering women through the development of digital skills. Through her leadership role in the company, Nida actively contributes to initiatives that aim to uplift and support women in her community and beyond.

Nida’s journey began at Karakoram International University, where she continues to hone her skills and expand her knowledge in Mass Communication. Her multifaceted role as a student, freelancer, entrepreneur, and advocate for women’s empowerment underscores her passion for making a meaningful impact in both the media industry and society at large.

Tanveer Alam

Tanveer Alam is a dedicated student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication, with a strong passion for storytelling, filmmaking, and media dynamics. He hails from the Haramosh Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan and currently resides in Khomer. Throughout his academic journey, he has built a solid foundation in communication theories, research methods, and multimedia projects.

Through various projects and assignments, Tanveer has explored different aspects of mass media, including print and broadcast journalism, digital media, and public relations. He won first place in the short film contest on World Tourism Day 2023 organized by the Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Department for his film “Reviving the Earth.”

His latest achievement is winning the World Environment Day Documentary Competition 2024, held by the media studies department of Karakoram International University. His documentary “From Barren to Blooming” earned first place and was praised for aligning with the event’s theme of “Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.” The event was organized in collaboration with several esteemed organizations, including GB EPA, IUCN, WWF, and the GB Tourism Department.

Professionally, Tanveer Alam has been an Editor at GB+ Network since 2020 and has worked as a technical staff member at Al Quaim Network and Mayaro Films. He is also the co-founder of TechMinds. TechMinds strives to offer a client-focused, comprehensive range of high-quality, timely services that empower clients to navigate real-time challenges effectively. The focus is on a wide variety of freelance courses and professional certifications. The courses are carefully designed to equip students with the skills needed to excel in their chosen fields. In addition, TechMinds provides IT consulting and training to emerging organizations and companies.

Tanveer Alam is also the founder and CEO of Dobani Films, a production house specializing in event coverage, documentary making, product advertising, and pre-wedding videography. He is eager to continue exploring mass communication and filmmaking, using his skills to make a meaningful impact.

Hafiza Ali

Hafiza Ali, an esteemed alumnus of Department of Media and Communication Studies, has carved a remarkable path as an entrepreneur, influencer, and advocate for female empowerment. Originating from Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan, Hafiza has made significant strides in diverse fields, including IT, production, and tourism.

As the founder and leader of Shecare Solutions Private Limited, Hafiza has spearheaded initiatives aimed at holistically empowering women. Her work in the company encompasses IT solutions, creative production, and tourism, providing invaluable opportunities and support to women in her community.

In addition to her entrepreneurial endeavors, Hafiza has embraced roles that highlight her versatile talents. She is a vlogger and social media influencer, captivating audiences with her content on mountain life and nature in Gilgit Baltistan. With a substantial following on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, her brand ‘Explore With Hafiza’ resonates widely.

Hafiza’s dedication extends to educational initiatives and community projects. She has conducted sessions on safe social media usage, communication and presentation skills, and female empowerment in Ghizer.

A notable aspect of Hafiza’s journey is her success as a female filmmaker. Her powerful films on women empowerment in Gilgit Baltistan have earned her five awards at different film festivals, showcasing her commitment to highlighting and addressing the challenges faced by women in her region through the medium of film.

Her professional journey also includes significant contributions to the e-commerce sector, having worked with a company specializing in sustainable home goods. This blend of digital marketing expertise and commitment to sustainable practices further exemplifies her multifaceted career.

In recognition of her achievements, Hafiza Ali stands as a shining example of how media and communication studies can be harnessed to create meaningful change, inspire others, and drive community development.
